The State of Rifles in CS2
Rifles are the backbone of Counter-Strike economy rounds. Knowing which rifles to buy — and when — is a skill unto itself. With CS2's updated hitbox system and subtick architecture affecting how spray patterns feel, some rifles have shifted in relative value. Here's a comprehensive breakdown of every rifle in the game.
S-Tier: Must-Buy Rifles
AK-47 — $2,700 (T-Side)
The AK-47 is the gold standard of T-side rifles. Its defining feature is its one-shot headshot capability through helmets, meaning a single well-placed head shot kills any CT regardless of armor. The trade-off is a more punishing spray pattern compared to M4 variants — the recoil kicks up and then curves left. Mastering the AK spray is a rite of passage in CS. At $2,700, it's also the most cost-effective full-power rifle in the game.
M4A1-S — $2,900 (CT-Side)
The M4A1-S is the preferred CT rifle for many players due to its silencer reducing sound and muzzle flash, along with excellent first-shot accuracy. Its spray pattern is more controllable than the M4A4. The downside is its smaller magazine (20+40 rounds vs. 30+90). In CS2, the M4A1-S has benefited from its precision at range, making it a top pick for holding long sightlines.
A-Tier: Excellent Situational Picks
M4A4 — $3,100 (CT-Side)
The M4A4 is the M4A1-S's louder, larger-magazine sibling. For players who go through ammunition quickly or prefer sound cues from their gun, the M4A4 is the better choice. It's slightly more expensive but provides a full 30-round mag, which matters enormously in eco frags or holding multiple enemies.
FAMAS — $2,050 (CT-Side)
Often overlooked, the FAMAS is a fantastic force-buy option. At $2,050 it's the cheapest CT rifle, and its burst-fire mode provides surprising accuracy at range. In half-buy rounds, a FAMAS-wielding CT can absolutely punish under-equipped Ts.
B-Tier: Viable With Caveats
SG 553 — $3,000 (T-Side)
The SG 553 is a scoped rifle that gives Ts one-shot headshot capability plus a scope for long-range accuracy. It went through periods of being wildly overpowered before nerfs. Today, it's a legitimate pick on maps with long sightlines, though its higher cost and slower movement speed keep it in B-tier for general use.
AUG — $3,300 (CT-Side)
The AUG's scope makes it excellent for holding long angles, but its high cost and slow rate of fire when unscoped make it a niche pick. On maps like Dust2 long or Inferno mid, it shines. Otherwise the M4 variants offer better overall value.
Galil AR — $1,800 (T-Side)
The Galil is a budget T-rifle. It doesn't one-shot headshot through helmets like the AK, but at $1,800 it's the right pick on light eco rounds when saving a full $2,700 isn't practical. A Galil with half-utility beats most pistol round setups.
